Category: Standard Roll
Level: Beginner/Intermediate

Description:  The spicy tuna roll is a staple in the sushi community and a pretty plain selection if you have simple tastes or just want a simple roll without all the sauces and flair.  Freestyle is being able to choose the veggies and ingredients you want and I selected avocado, cucumber, asparagus and jalapenos with a nice eel sauce on the top.

Utah Sushi Roll Expert Review:
Our expert reviews take into account four factors: food quality, cleanliness of location, service and price. Ratings are on a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being outstanding. Our rating for this Restaurant is as follows:

Overall Rating: 3.6
On a trip to Vancouver Washington we toured along the norther Oregon Coast.  One day we stopped for lunch in Seaside Oregon and found Tora Sushi Lounge.  It’s a great location right near the beach so we were sure to have fresh fish.  The roads in the older part of town are very narrow but Tora is right on the corner and you can park across the street by the hardware store.  The restaurant is decorated pretty cool with authentic looking Japanese artwork and pieces.  We were served quickly and the food was super fresh and super tasty.  It was a momentous occasion as my wife tried and successfully ate her first sushi roll.  For some time I have been trying to convince her that sushi isn’t just raw fish and that there would be some sushi that she’d actually like.  The Spicy Scallop roll in soy paper was the roll that did it.  Nothing too grand, but still a first step.

Quality: 4.5
I was very pleased with the overall quality of Tora Sushi Lounge.  I expected fresh tasting ingredients and I wasn’t disappointing.  Everything tasted and looked fresh!

Cleanliness: 3.5
The restaurant looks like it’s been open for some time yet the furnishings were fairly new and I didn’t see anything obvious.  There are a lot of decorations in this place and with the constant beach sand it could become a problem but I didn’t notice anything that gave me cause for concern.

Service: 3
The service was good.  We were one of the first ones in for the evening service and though we had a small wait to order our food came out fairly quickly.  The waitress wasn’t overly nice or inquisitive but provided service with a smile.  A little more friendliness could go a long way.

Price: 3.5
The price is typical for a sushi restaurant for a tourist area.  They have a happy hour with actually very reasonably priced rolls and sashimi.  I wasn’t disturbed by the price and found that I could get a fair selection at rather reasonable prices.

Utah Sushi Roll Expert Review:
Our expert reviews take into account four factors: food quality, cleanliness of location, service and price. Ratings are on a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being outstanding. Important to note that an average restaurant will get a 3 rating. Our rating for this Restaurant is as follows:

Overall Rating: 4.0
I just happened across Freestyle Sushi in a Facebook search and found their listing for a new sushi restaurant that opened in the Fort Union area and I was excited to check them out. Freestyle Sushi is not your ordinary sushi restaurant. They specialize in made to order sushi. You can select from their standard menu or you can have a roll made with only the ingredients you want. You move down the line selecting your protein, vegetables and then sauces and sides just like you would at Cafe Rio.  Another great item is they know that sometime you’ll bring your children and they may not have developed a taste for sushi.  They offer an Peanut Butter and Jelly roll that I know crave.  it’s a very odd experience at first to taste the combination but you’ll find yourself thinking about it days later.

Quality: 3.5
Although Freestyle Sushi provides quality sushi and reasonable prices very quickly they are not what I’d call fast food sushi. The fact is that most of the sushi restaurants in Utah get their food from the same supplier and so their sushi is as fresh as any other restaurant. While they are a new restaurant and learning they are very eager to provide a quality product. I’ve seen behind the counter here and seen the lengths they go through to provide quality product and I’ve seen their processes that are higher than what I’ve seen at other restaurants.

Cleanliness: 4.0
The restaurant is very clean as it’s a brand new restaurant. Everything is new and clean and they go through a lot of effort to provide a clean experience.

Service: 4.5
The service at Freestyle Sushi is great. This is one of the best parts of grabbing a quick bite for lunch. Many sushi restaurants can take 10-15 minutes to get you your food. If you don’t have time for lunch or dinner to wait you will love Freestyle Sushi.  Another thing I liked over traditional sushi restaurants is that they are extremely friendly, welcome you into the restaurant and make for a great experience that helps you through the process especially if you are new to sushi and not sure what to order.

Price: 4.0
The price is another great point in favor of Freestyle Sushi as you pay about the same price as you would for any other restaurants sushi rolls but they give you a generous 10 piece roll. It’s easy to be satisfied with one roll and completely full with two. Also if you compare the price to what you’d pay at other restaurants around the area you get a great deal of healthier food for the same price.

Sushi, Nigiri and Sashimi. What’s the difference?

salmon-sashimiWhen most people think of sushi the first thing they think is “ew gross, raw fish”.  Much of sushi has no raw fish.  In fact sushi is all about the preparation of the rice in sushi and nothing really to do with raw fish.  Sushi can contain raw fish, but that’s not what sushi is when you order it from a Japanese restaurant or sushi bar.

Sushi is mainly standard rolls and specialty rolls some with and without raw fish.  Next is nigiri which is a finger sized oval of sushi rice with a piece of seafood or other ingredient on top.  This tends to be more raw fish, but doesn’t have to be.

Sashimi is the actual raw fish.  You get a filet of some kind of fish, tuna, salmon or other tasty morsel.

Here is a whole gallery full of great sushi rolls without any raw fish.  From vegetarian and vegan rolls to just cooked seafood, there is a large assortment of sushi rolls with tasty non-raw ingredients.
