Utah Sushi Restaurant

Dinner at Mikado

It was a momentous occasion the other night. Not only was I celebrating a birthday with dinner out at a sushi restaurant with my family, it was my oldest son’s first real trip out for sushi.

If I can get a thirteen year old who has historically been a picky eater to try sushi and like it I think I’ve helped spread the joy of sushi to another person in the world. I think he actually ate more than I did which is no easy task.

I knew it was his first time so I wanted to play it safe with some standard rolls including a Playboy, Vegas and Tempura Crunch Roll. To our surprise he didn’t even bat an eye at eating the raw fish in and on the rolls. I think I’ve found a new sushi buddy, I’m so happy.

My youngest son ordered the mac and cheese bento box, so my work is not done…he said with a twinkle in his eye.

Utah Sushi Roll Expert Review:
Our expert reviews take into account four factors: food quality, cleanliness of location, service and price. Ratings are on a 1 to 5 scale with 5 being outstanding. Our rating for this Restaurant is as follows:

Overall Rating: 3.8
Stopped by for a nice lunch for my first visit to Tsunami at Union Heights and I was pleasantly surprised.  I’ve heard a lot about Tsunami over the years but have not had the chance to sample their sushi thus far.  I have to say the restaurant lived up to the hype.  The quality of the food, service and price are all spot on.  I made sure to get a VIP card as I’ll be back again…soon!

Quality: 4.5
The quality of sushi at Tsunami is a step above the rest to be honest.   Even on a simple roll the quality of the ingredients and preparation were top notch.  The combination of ingredients created some distinct and tantalizing flavors in my mouth.

Cleanliness: 4
The restaurant is in a fairly new area and the inside is nicely decorated and everything seemed very clean.  It’s a high-class establishment.  No small stoves and tinfoil hanging off the shelf here.  Very tidy and pleasant to sit down and enjoy some sushi.

Service: 3.5
The service was great.  I had a new waiter that was being trained but they were very attentive and my glass was never empty.  Service was great and I didn’t want for anything.

Price: 3.5
For a higher end sushi restaurant I would have expected the prices to be much higher.  Tsunami has been able to bring a quality product to their customers with some personal touches at a price that doesn’t break the bank.

Some great veggie rolls at Sushi Express

I saw a number of new rolls that I’ve never tried and wanted to have a bit of adventure today.

I tried the Horenso which is a spinach roll, Natto with fermented soybeans and a Ume Kyu roll with pickled plums and cucumber.

Horenso Roll

Horenso Roll

Horenso Roll
spinach, rice
Category: Standard Roll
Level: Beginner

Description:  The Horenso is an interesting roll.  You already have green veggie with most the nori or seaweed in most standard rolls but adding a bit of spinach still gives it a different taste.  Not a very strong taste but a pleasant roll if you like spinach.  It’s a great vegetarian sushi roll and is good for a beginner.  Add a little soy and wasabi to spice it up!

Saigon Roll

Saigon Roll

cucumber, salmon, tempura jalapeño, crushed peanut, lime juice, mikado sauce, cilantro, chili sauce

Category: Specialty Roll
Level: Intermediate/Advanced

Saigon Roll Description: This is a nice tasting roll, not your normal maki type roll but the peanut, lime juice and chili sauce together make for a great flavor.

Spicy Tuna Roll

Category: Specialty Roll
Level: Intermediate

Spicy Tuna Roll Description: The Spicy tuna roll is a great standard roll if you’re a fan of tuna.  It’s a raw roll so you have to not mind raw tuna.  Mixed with other great veggies and spices though you get a nice rich flavor.

If you’d like to try to make it on your own watch this video for a great spicy tuna roll recipe.

Mikado’s Secret Menu

Mikado sushi restaurant has a secret menu…shhhhhh!  Mikado is an oasis for sushi lovers in the Davis County area.  While there are a number of great sushi restaurants in the Salt Lake Valley they are fewer and farther in-between once you start heading north.  Mikado’s in Bountiful is one of the better sushi restaurants you’ll encounter and to my knowledge the only one in Bountiful.

Mikado’s is also great as they have good food for those who want something more or different than sushi.  I can bring my non-sushi loving family along and they can get something like the Mango Chicken Yakitori and we’re all fat an happy!

Many restaurants do this, we’ve all heard about the famed In-and-Out Burger secret menu, so if you’re a sushi lover and want to try something new head on down and try one of the Mikado secret menu sushi rolls.
